Sardinia's Punta Molentis beach is making headlines for a unique and controversial rule: adults are banned from setting up beach umbrellas, while children and the elderly over 65 are allowed. This decision, issued by the mayor of Villasimius, Gianluca Dessì, has sparked a heated debate among locals and tourists alike. The mayor's order, in effect from June 6 to October 31, 2026, is a response to the beach's fragile ecosystem, which was severely impacted by a devastating wildfire in July 2025. The fire not only endangered tourists but also destroyed vegetation and vehicles, prompting the need for strict measures to protect the area.
The core of this measure is a strict cap on visitor numbers, aiming to limit the impact both by land and sea. Access by land is limited to 70 vehicles per day and 150 people at a time, with a ban on umbrellas and other shading devices. One umbrella is permitted for family groups with children under 10 and the elderly over 65. For sea access, limited to 100 people at a time and through authorized operators, there are restrictions on disembarking with backpacks and cool bags, and a maximum stay of one hour.
Mayor Dessì justified the drastic measures by emphasizing the need to protect the environment, safeguard protected habitats, and ensure user safety. The order also prohibits driving poles, tents, or gazebos into the ground, stressing the importance of keeping human pressure within limits compatible with the beach's current conditions. Local police will conduct inspections to ensure compliance with opening hours, which are from 8:00 to 20:30, with three inspections per day.

Residents and tourists are questioning the logic of the rule, with sarcastic comments like 'hire a child to put up an umbrella' and 'bring a grandfather or have a baby by tomorrow' circulating on the municipality's Facebook page.
