Russia's relentless assault on Ukraine has once again plunged hundreds of thousands of people into freezing darkness. This isn't an isolated incident; Russia has been accused of deliberately freezing Ukraine's population, cutting power and heating to tens of thousands of homes. The recent strikes coincide with the coldest temperatures during the Russian invasion, plunging Kyiv to -19C and Kharkiv to -23C overnight. Energy Minister Denys Shmygal accused Russia of using ballistic and cruise missiles and drones to target high-rise buildings and thermal power plants, leaving hundreds of thousands of families, including children, without heat in the midst of winter. President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the attack, emphasizing Russia's disregard for diplomacy in favor of terrorizing its people during the coldest days of winter. The Kremlin's temporary ceasefire, which ended on Sunday, was a brief respite from the chaos. Despite the ongoing conflict, Ukraine reported a recent 'de-escalation' with Russia, which Mr. Zelensky believes is fostering trust in negotiations. However, the US has been working tirelessly to craft a comprehensive settlement, and the trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi have so far failed to yield a breakthrough. The second round of talks, scheduled for Wednesday, will focus on territory, with no progress made on the crucial issue. Russia's relentless pursuit of control over Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region has not been successful, as Kyiv firmly states that such a move would only embolden Moscow. After its failed lightning offensive to capture Kyiv in 2022, Russia is now facing a grinding advance, incurring a huge human cost. Moscow's troops have accelerated their advance in Ukraine throughout January, capturing almost twice as much land as in the previous month, according to an AFP analysis. The Institute for the Study of War's data reveals that Russia seized 481 square kilometers in January, a significant increase from December 2025. This January's gains are one of the largest advances during a winter month since the invasion began four years ago, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
